ASSÉ supports the New York University Graduate Student Organizing Committee and its participation in the BDS movement

As the Israeli State celebrates its more than 65 years of occupation of the Palestinian Territories, ASSÉ offers its support to the members of the New York University Graduate Student Organizing Committee (GSOC-UAW Local 2110) who voted by wide margins in a referendum to participate in the BDS movement.

BDS (Boycott, divest, and sanction) is an international social movement aiming to condemn the Israeli apartheid and its violation of the Palestinian people’s human rights, as well as to exert pressure on the Israeli government. The GSOC-UAW Local 2110 also voted to boycott academic research funded by the Israeli government. This is truly historical as GSOC-UAW Local 2110 is the first student workers’ union in a private college to support the international BDS campaign.

ASSÉ reiterates its support of the Boycott, divest, and sanctions campaign, a position which it adopted in 2008, and stands in solidarity with all related political projects, and also condemns the Canadian government’s collaboration with the Israeli State. We hope that your vote will bring new life to the US-based BDS campaign and that it will also serve as an issue that will mobilize the American student population on issues pertaining to the oppression of the Palestinian people by the Israeli State.

ASSÉ would also like to take this opportunity in order to salute GSOC-UAW Local 2110’s determination in empowering local unions for political action.

L'ASSÉ soutient le Graduate Student Organizing Committee de l'Université de New-York et sa participation au mouvement BDS

Alors que l'État Israélien célèbre maintenant plus de 65 ans d'occupation sur le territoire de la Palestine, l'ASSÉ tient à montrer son support envers les membres du Graduate Student Organizing Committee de l'Université de New-York (ou GSOC-UAW Local 2110) qui, à la suite d'un référendum, viennent d'adopter à forte majorité des mandats pour participer au mouvement BDS.

Le mouvement BDS, « Boycott, désinvestissements et sanctions », est un mouvement populaire international visant à dénoncer l'Apartheid israélien et la violation des droits humains des Palestiens et Palestiennes et à exercer une pression économique sur le gouvernement israélien. Le GSOC-UAW Local 2110 a également voté en faveur d’un boycott des recherches académiques financées par le gouvernement israélien. Ce vote est historique puisqu'il s'agit du premier syndicat de travailleurs étudiants et de travailleuses étudiantes au sein d'une université privée à supporter le mouvement BDS.

L'ASSÉ profite de l'occasion pour réitérer qu'elle appuie la campagne Boycott, désinvestissements et sanctions depuis 2008, qu'elle est solidaire de tous projets politiques allant dans le même sens et qu'elle dénonce la collaboration du gouvernement canadien avec l'État israélien. Nous espérons que ce vote apportera un second souffle au mouvement BDS aux États-Unis et qu'il s'agira d'une occasion pour sensibiliser et mobiliser la population étudiante américaine sur les enjeux concernant l’oppression de l’État israélien sur le peuple palestinien.

L'ASSÉ appuie par la même occasion la volonté du GSOC-UAW Local 2110 d'affirmer le pouvoir d'agir des syndicats locaux en tant que levier politique.
